* Prior to 1869, the President of the Board of County Commissioners served as the Superintendent of Public Instruction. In addition, the President of the Board served as Judge of Probate and coroner. The first Board President to serve as school superintendent was Simon Truman (1853), followed by Edward Clark (1861), Bertrand Bledsoe (1863), and John Darling (1866).
Note: All superintendents prior to C. J. Craig were elected. Dr. Shelton, Dr. Sickles, and Dr. Lennard were appointed by the Board of Education. Craig was appointed by Governor Haydon Bums.
